Signed in ink on the bottom right of the recto of the mount just below the photograph.Germaine Van Parys (1893-1983) is considered the first female photo journalist in Belgium. Although she took her first photos at the age of 15, Van Parys's career in photography took off in 1918 when she photographed the Royal Couple in newly liberated Brussels. She joined the daily newspaper Le Soir in 1922 and worked for La Meuse (Liège) and L'Illustration (Paris). At the launch of the National Association of Photographic Reporters, she was its Vice-President. She photographed the first Brussels-Congo flight, Lindbergh's landing in Brussels and Piccard in his stratospheric balloon. In 1939, she met Einstein on the docks of the port of Antwerp, next to the ship which was to take him to the USA.Van Parys became a war correspondent in 1940, and in 1958 started the Vanparys Photo Agency (1958), which still exists. A number of editors and museums are preparing a book and several exhibitions on her and her work.Prints by Van Parys are very rare. Only her glass plates are well known. The book and the exhibition will be based on her glass plate negatives.
