This image has the perfect provenance from the photographer directly to the models. With the photographer's red stamp on verso and negative number in pencil. Comes with a letter of provenance from Marc Chevalier, the man in the photograph. The couple were married, but his wife passed away. The most famous image from the subway series is this one where Christiane holds in her hands a sprig of lily of the valley (muguet de bois). Lily of the valley is referred to as a "porte-bonheur"--literally, "bringer of happiness" or perhaps what we would call a good luck charm. It is sold around May Day in France. Marc looks pensively at her.See: Doisneau, Mes Parisiens, pl.11; Hamilton, Robert Doisneau: A Photographer's Life, pl.350; Pultz, The Body and Lens: Photography 1839 to Present, pl.66; Alex Novak, For the Love of the Image: A Selection of 110 Photographs, p.88, fig.90.Provenance: Photographer to models, Marc and Christiane Chevalier. © Gamma Rapho, Robert Doisneau.
