G. Ray Hawkins, who opened the first public gallery in Los Angeles devoted to photography in 1975, died last December 11. He was 80 years old.

Hawkins’s gallery introduced numerous well- known photographers to Los Angeles, like Avedon and Penn, and fostered the careers of several gallerists and photographers, including David Fahey, Randee Klein (Hawkins’s first wife), Jan Kesner, Jo Ann Callis, Greg Gorman, and Lauren Greenfield.

Hawkins closed his gallery in 2005 but continued as a private dealer.

In 2008 Hawkins was sentenced by United States District Judge Dean D. Pregerson to spend 12 months and one day in prison for participating in a conspiracy to defraud the Internal Revenue Service. He was ordered to serve 36 months on supervised release upon completing his prison sentence and was ordered to pay $35,042 in restitution to the IRS, but his sentence was later reduced to eight months.
